Powder

The lower mainland received about 30 centimeters of snow this week. This created chaos for drivers on the streets and travellers at the airport. I took advantage of the opportunity to get outside and explore with my camera. Click on any photo in the gallery to see a larger image size.

Raw and Unfiltered

I just returned from a twelve day trip to northern Vancouver Island. The nickname ‘Fogust’ is appropriate because there was a lot of fog each morning, which would usually burn off by the middle of the day. There was an abundance of wildlife and I spent time observing and photographing Killer Whales, Humpback Whales, a Minke Whale, Dall’s Porpoises, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, Steller Sea Lions, Harbour Seals, Sea Otters, Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Pelagic Cormorants, Black Turnstones, Red-necked Phalaropes, Bonaparte’s Gulls, Marbled Murrelets, Pigeon Guillemots, Black Oystercatchers, Common Murres, Rhinoceros Auklets, Surf Scoters, Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, and of course, the bird in the picture below, which is a male Belted Kingfisher ( click on the image to see a larger version ). This area is the traditional lands of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw, Kwakiutl, and Tlatlasikwala First Nations. To see some of my photos from my trip you can click on the ‘News‘ tab or the ‘Galleries’ tab and then the gallery titled ‘The Great Bear Sea‘.

Happy Holidays

I came across this herd of Roosevelt elk grazing in a meadow. With the setting sun and frosted trees in the background it created a beautiful winter scene. Roosevelt elk have a golden brown coat during the summer and a longer, grayish brown coat during the winter. Their legs, head and neck remain dark brown year round. Have a wonderful Christmas and happy new year. Click on the photo to see a larger version.

Spirit of Christmas

As I was walking by a church in Vancouver I noticed these small care packages had been left just outside the door for the homeless. Each package contained a few cookies, a package of hot chocolate and even a toothbrush. I thought it was a really kind gesture on the part of the church and reflects the true spirit of Christmas. Silent and White

I woke up this morning to find Vancouver covered in a rare blanket of snow. The perfect opportunity to explore the downtown area with my camera. I ran into some workers shovelling snow at Canada Place who referred to me as another ‘brave soul’. I returned home after several hours of trudging through the snow feeling cold and happy. Happy Holidays!

The 18th edition of the CP Holiday Train which helps to support communities and raise awareness of hunger-related issues. Every pound of food and dollar raised at each stop stays with the local food bank to help feed those in need in that community. We even had some snow on the ground this year. Click on each photo to see a larger version.

The Ferris Wheel

This evening there was a break in the rain, which provided the opportunity to get out with my camera and take a few images. I tried taking some long exposures of the Ferris wheel when it was spinning which created a blur effect, but I think I like this photo better when the Ferris wheel was stopped to unload and load passengers. Happy Thanksgiving

Vancouver Island is a great place to visit and live. Island life is more laid-back when compared to the hectic pace of the Vancouver lower mainland. I was fortunate to experience some sunny weather when I was exploring with my camera. One of the things I noticed was at night when I was sleeping it was pitch dark and eerily quiet, you couldn’t hear another sound. In the lower mainland you experience noise and light pollution 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Some of the communities on Vancouver Island seem to be struggling like many small towns in Canada.
