Mount Seymour

Last night we received some heavy rain in Vancouver and I knew it would be snowing in the mountains. Early this morning I snowshoed up to the summit of Mount Seymour and it was difficult breaking trail and carrying all of my photography equipment. However, it was worth the effort because as the sun rose the clouds started to burn off and combined with the fresh snow it created great conditions for photography. On the summit where it receives the most snow and the winds are strongest there were some beautiful snow ghosts. It was a great day and after all that exercise I will sleep well tonight. Simple Is Hard

This morning I went snowshoeing even though the weather conditions didn’t look very promising. There was dense fog and driving snow which looked like fertilizer pellets on my jacket. As I snowshoed up the trail it was quiet and peaceful. Since the sky lacked any interesting details I focused on creating images that were simple, which is often difficult to do in photography. I spent most of my time taking pictures of the snow covered trees. Some of the smaller ones bend over due to the weight of the snow. Click on an image to see a larger version.

Traffic Chaos

On Family Day here in British Columbia the weather was sunny with a mild temperature and thin wispy clouds. It looked like it was going to be a beautiful sunset, so I thought this location would make for a nice photo. When I returned to my vehicle I experienced a huge amount of traffic volume which resulted in me taking several hours to get home. Note to self, in the future, don’t try to drive anywhere in the lower mainland on the Monday of a long weekend. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Life Finds A Way # 2

This tree is growing in the middle of an alley behind some condominiums in downtown Vancouver. The trunk of the tree is surrounded by concrete. Cars and garbage trucks squeeze past this tree every day. I’m amazed it hasn’t been cut down by the city and the tree has found a way to survive. Many years ago this area was covered with trees like this one, but this is the last of it’s kind.

Lions Gate Bridge and Downtown Vancouver

I’m glad I made the effort to get up early this morning. I captured this unique photo of the fog engulfing the Lions Gate bridge, the trees in Stanley Park and tall buildings in downtown Vancouver. Click on the image to see a larger and more impressive version.

Lemon Yellow Sun

Today I snowshoed to the top of the second peak of Mount Seymour. I took this photo, looking back and down at people on the first peak. While most of the people in the lower mainland were driving around in the fog. I was in the sunshine, enjoying a wonderful view, while eating my lunch. At nearly 5000 feet a sandwich and milk chocolate tastes like heaven. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Happy New Year

In the Spirit of Brassaï

Brassaï was a Hungarian photographer who took pictures of Paris in the late 1920’s. He wandered the streets of Paris late at night and captured the essence of the city in his photographs. Making photographs in the dark bistros and darker streets presented a difficult technical problem. Brassai’s solution was direct, primitive, and perfect. He focused his small plate camera on a tripod, opened the shutter when ready, and fired a flashbulb. I have his book Brassai: Paris by Night and would recommend it to any photographer. Last night I was out taking some images in the spirit of Brassai. Click on the image to see a larger version.
