Remembrance Day

Every year at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day and replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to raise money for veterans. Usually on Remembrance day it’s raining, but this year it was cloudy, windy and cold. The ceremony is a wonderful place to take images because of all the interesting people, colours and movement. I tried using a large aperture to create an interesting ‘bokeh’ in my images. There were a number of individuals who needed first aid treatment. I guess standing at attention for a long period of time left some people feeling dizzy.

A Fall Evening

I had this interesting idea for a photo of some cool architecture close to where I live. For several weeks I’ve returned to this one location, but for one reason or another, it never seems to come together in terms of my original concept. Oh well, I need to be patient and keep trying.

This evening I decided to spend some time exploring with my camera in the hopes of finding something interesting to shoot. It’s true, the more you get out there with your camera, the more likely you are to capture some good images.

The Crane

After the rain had stopped I ventured out with my camera. I found this puddle and tried to capture the reflection of the crane in a unique way. The cracks in the pavement and the lone leaf are also interesting.

The Gate

If I’m going to spend a few hours exploring and shooting images, I always take my tripod. There is obvious benefits, like it helps to eliminate any camera movement, which ensures sharp photos, but what I really like about using a tripod is that it forces me to slow down and think carefully about the composition of my images.

The Joy of Night Photography

Shooting images in low light is challenging, but it’s also very rewarding. After the sun goes down the world is magically transformed as the night seems more alive and richly coloured. I have always admired the photos of George Brassai and his 1932 book Paris By Night. He wandered the streets of Paris late at night taking pictures of back alleys, Metro stations and bistros.

Celebration of Light

Every summer in Vancouver there is a wonderful fireworks competition where different countries compete against one another. This year the countries competing are Vietnam, Brazil and Italy. As many as 400,000 people come out each evening to watch the fireworks. First up was Vietnam and I was able to capture this image during their show.

The Earth at Night

This video is composed of images taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It shows the lights from major cities, lightning and the Aurora Borealis. It’s simply amazing.

Wapiti

I recently spent a week camping and taking images in Jasper National Park. The weather was very hot and since we received a lot of rain in June there were plenty of mosquitoes. One morning as I was walking back to my campsite I came across this female elk in the picnic shelter. The cement floor made it very cool and by resting in here she was able to temporarily escape the heat. I never saw any of the campers using this shelter, probably because of the mosquitoes, but it was nice to see the elk putting it to good use.

The Chain

© Jens Preshaw

Last weekend I climbed to the top of a granite monolith in the Coast Mountains. It was a beautiful sunny day and there were lots of people hiking with their dogs in the provincial park. After a few hours I reached the summit and there was a chain to help people up a relatively steep section of granite. I was intrigued by the chain and how the rain had rusted it and stained the granite rock. I tried to create a composition that just showed the chain and granite, without any distracting background clutter. Sometimes simple is hard.

Super Moon

© Jens Preshaw

Last night was an amazing evening for photographer’s to be outside with their cameras. It was a rare combination of clear skies and a ‘Super Moon’ or ‘Perogee Moon’. The full moon was at its closest point to the Earth and was 14% bigger and 30% brighter than any of the other full moons in 2012. There was also the highest high tides and lowest low tides during this time, although the difference was only a few centimeters. The image above is a 30 second exposure of the Coast Mountains bathed in the moonlight.
