The Salt of the Earth

As a photographer I was fortunate to recently see the documentary The Salt of the Earth. It’s about the Brazilian master photographer Sebastiao Salgado. The film is directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. For over 40 years Sebastiao Salgado has taken powerful black and white images about ever-changing humanity.

700 Metres Of Vertical

Today I hiked to the top of the Third Peak or North Summit of the Stawamus Chief. When you reach the glacier-polished granite summit you are rewarded with a view in all directions. A chipmunk joined me for lunch. This small mammal is difficult to photograph because it rarely sits still.

Slacklining

This individual was slacklining over the Brandywine Falls which are 70 metres or 230 feet high. I took lots of horizontal and vertical images, but I think I like this composition the best. I can only imagine what it was like to be walking across this slackline and seeing the water falling some 75 metres below. What a rush.

Capture Photography Festival

During the month of April the Capture Photography Festival is taking place in Vancouver. There are over 100 exhibitions, public installations and events. Today I saw Tokyo by Matthew Pillsbury and The Last Stand by David Ellingsen. I hope by viewing some of the exhibitions it will inspire me as a photographer.

MindShift Filter Hive

Even though I’ve only had it for a short period of time I’m very happy with my MindShift Gear Filter Hive. It holds six round filters and six flat neutral density filters. It is colour coded to help with organization and there is room for my filter holder, remote release cable and a lens cleaning cloth.

West Coast Sunset

Without their leaves the trees create an interesting silhouette. At the end of the day there was a beautiful west coast sunset.

Ansco Shur Shot 20

I found this little treasure, an Ansco Shur Shot 20 box camera, in an antiques store. It’s in excellent condition and even had the original box. The camera was made around 1948 in Binghamton, New York. It has two brilliant viewfinders, which allows for horizontal or vertical composition. There is a fixed aperture of f/13 and it uses 120 film to take 6 x 9 cm images. What I really like is the Art Deco design of the metal faceplate.

Venus Rising

This week I continue to experiment with painting with light. I like this image with the ferry on the left and the planet Venus just after sunset. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Painting With Light

It was a cold evening, but I didn’t really notice, because I was having ALL CAPS FUN. It was my first attempt at painting with light and I’m happy with a few of my images. Click on a photo to see a larger version.

Kung Hei Fat Choi

Spent some time taking images at the Chinese New Year Parade. It’s the Year of the Sheep. It often rains on Chinese New Year, but not this year. People we need to learn some parade etiquette.
