A Beautiful Province

I’m always trying to learn new things. When I’ve been out taking images with my camera I’ve also brought along my drone. This is my first attempt at creating a video and adding music. In the lower right hand corner you can click on the button ‘Enter full screen’. You can also select the video quality at 1080p resolution so it’s nice and clear. No wildlife was harassed in the making of this video.

Happy Holidays

I came across this herd of Roosevelt elk grazing in a meadow. With the setting sun and frosted trees in the background it created a beautiful winter scene. Roosevelt elk have a golden brown coat during the summer and a longer, grayish brown coat during the winter. Their legs, head and neck remain dark brown year round. Have a wonderful Christmas and happy new year. Click on the photo to see a larger version.

Bufflehead

One of the smallest ducks the Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) is very energetic in its feeding. They eat aquatic insects, mollusks and small amounts of plant material. It forages mostly underwater. Less sociable than most ducks, seen in pairs or small groups, almost never in large flocks. The Bufflehead in the photo below is a female. Note the auricular white patch. She was repeatedly diving in front of me along the riverbank. Click on the photo to see a larger version.

Bald Eagle

During the winter months, large numbers of Bald Eagles congregate along the river to feed on salmon carcasses. A decade ago there was nearly 4000 Bald Eagles. In January 2016 it was one of the lowest Bald Eagle counts in the 30 year history, with only 411. This morning, I was photographing this Bald Eagle perched in a tree along the river.

My New Watermark

I designed a new watermark to add to my photos. In the image of the swimming grizzly bear I’ve enlarged it. It will usually be displayed smaller in the left or right bottom corner of the photo. Click on the image to see a larger version.

Bald Eagles

Lesser Snow Geese

The Lesser Snow Goose ( Chen caerulescens ) is a large bird that is all white with black wing tips. In the Fall Lesser Snow Geese migrate south along the west coast from Wrangel Island in Siberia. This year their annual migration is twice the size of last year. During migration they fly so high they can barely be seen. Click on the photo to see a larger version.

Fall Foliage

Early this morning, as I was driving through the fog and rain, I wondered if I’d made a bad decision and should have stayed at home. However, shortly after sunrise, the clouds started to break up and there was intermittent sunshine. It was a wonderful day to take images with a camera and shoot video with a drone. It just goes to show you, one of the best things you can do in photography is simple, just get out there with your camera. Click on an image to see a larger version.

Northern Flicker – Male (Red Shafted)

I spent some time this morning taking images of a Northern Flicker which is a type of woodpecker. You wouldn’t expect to see a woodpecker on the ground, but the Northern Flicker spends a lot of time there digging for ants and beetles with their slightly curved bill. In eastern North America the Flickers flight-feather shafts are lemon yellow and in the west they are rosy red. The Northern Flicker has beautiful plumage and this particular bird with the red moustache stripe is a male. Click on the photo to see a larger version.

The Rock Climber

This photo of a rock climber standing on a small ledge shows how insignificant a person can be when compared to nature. The Stawamus Chief is a giant granite monolith that is world famous for its climbing. Sometimes referred to as ‘Yosemite North’, it has immense vertical walls, long cool slabs and beautiful cracks that provides a variety of climbing. I was taking photos late in the day when the setting sun was casting a warm glow on the granite face. Click on the image to see a larger version.
