Fireworks

This year three countries, Canada, Thailand and the United Kingdom competed in the Celebration of Light. When the fireworks end it’s a unique experience to walk with nearly 350,000 people as they exit the downtown area. I like this image because it was taken close to the beginning of the performance when the sun had just set and there is the shilouette of the mountains in the distance.

Stained Glass

The summer solstice takes place on June 21st in the northern hemisphere. This is one of the longest days of the year. Right now is a great time to explore and take images in the evening. Tonight it didn’t get dark until almost 9:30 p.m. and it was warm, quiet and there was hardly a breath of wind.

Flowing Water

When taking a long exposure of flowing water a tripod is a necessity. An exposure of a few seconds gives the water a velvety effect. Longer exposures up to 30 seconds gives the water a milky effect, like the image below. I’ve read that images of waterfalls never seem to do very well in photo contests. Oh well, I still like to experiment with slow shutter speeds to create a graceful blur.

Tree Silhouette

As a photographer I’m visually drawn to silhouettes. This is an object or scene that is backlit, and appears dark against a lighter background. This time of year many of the trees don’t have leaves on them yet and I find beauty in the way the branches are reaching out towards the sun. In the second image, if you look closely, the tree branches appear to be reaching for the planet Jupiter which is visible in the western sky right after sunset.

A Fall Evening

I had this interesting idea for a photo of some cool architecture close to where I live. For several weeks I’ve returned to this one location, but for one reason or another, it never seems to come together in terms of my original concept. Oh well, I need to be patient and keep trying.

This evening I decided to spend some time exploring with my camera in the hopes of finding something interesting to shoot. It’s true, the more you get out there with your camera, the more likely you are to capture some good images.

The Joy of Night Photography

Shooting images in low light is challenging, but it’s also very rewarding. After the sun goes down the world is magically transformed as the night seems more alive and richly coloured. I have always admired the photos of George Brassai and his 1932 book Paris By Night. He wandered the streets of Paris late at night taking pictures of back alleys, Metro stations and bistros.

Celebration of Light

Every summer in Vancouver there is a wonderful fireworks competition where different countries compete against one another. This year the countries competing are Vietnam, Brazil and Italy. As many as 400,000 people come out each evening to watch the fireworks. First up was Vietnam and I was able to capture this image during their show.

The Earth at Night

This video is composed of images taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It shows the lights from major cities, lightning and the Aurora Borealis. It’s simply amazing.

Super Moon

© Jens Preshaw

Last night was an amazing evening for photographer’s to be outside with their cameras. It was a rare combination of clear skies and a ‘Super Moon’ or ‘Perogee Moon’. The full moon was at its closest point to the Earth and was 14% bigger and 30% brighter than any of the other full moons in 2012. There was also the highest high tides and lowest low tides during this time, although the difference was only a few centimeters. The image above is a 30 second exposure of the Coast Mountains bathed in the moonlight.
