Breakthrough Photography – Filters

I first heard about Breakthrough Photography through their Kickstarter campaign. They are a group of photographers who have decided to create their own UV, Circular Polarizer and Neutral Density filters. What I like about these filters is each filter is double-threaded which ensures that the lens cap will stay on. There is Multi-Resistant and Nano coatings. They are also very thin which will help to eliminate vignetting. I’m looking forward to taking images with some of these filters.

The Fringe Festival

DSC_0680The Vancouver Fringe Festival has been taking place in September. I’ve seen some amazing one man shows and have been impressed with the talent of the actors. The Fringe has a wonderful policy of no latecomers.

The Orpheum

The Orpheum is a grand old theatre in downtown Vancouver that was built by the Scottish architect Marcus Priteca, which officially opened on November 7, 1927 as a vaudeville house. It was the biggest theatre in Canada when it opened, with three thousand seats and it cost $1.25 million to construct. I was fortunate to take a tour of the theatre which has  huge and beautiful crystal chandeliers and the original Wurlitzer organ.

Beauty Is Everywhere

Recently, I was walking downtown and passed by a bridge where some construction was taking place. Some heavy metal cable was hanging down and it immediately caught my eye. The way it had been spliced and tied off reminded me of a sculpture that could hang as contemporary art in a gallery. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional by the construction workers, but they inadvertently created a beautiful sculpture. Beauty is all around us. I see it every day and sometimes in the most unlikely of places.

The Inversion Layer

We experienced a unique weather phenomenon on the weekend called an inversion layer. At sea level it was foggy and cold, but as you increased your elevation the sky cleared and the temperature was warmer. Being up in the mountains and gazing down on the city and ocean it appeared like they were covered by a carpet of clouds. It also created a sunset with vibrant colours.

The Earth at Night

This video is composed of images taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It shows the lights from major cities, lightning and the Aurora Borealis. It’s simply amazing.

MOVE, LEARN and EAT

These 3 videos were shot in 11 different countries over 44 days. Right from the beginning they grab your attention and don’t let go. When I see short videos like MOVE, LEARN and EAT it inspires me to get out and do something creative.
